April Kontostathis

April Kontostathis, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, earned a Ph.D. in computer science from Lehigh University.  She has written numerous articles that describe methods for determining the most critical values in the reduced dimensionality matrix, and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI).  She has also authored many articles on using machine learning techniques to detect cyber predation and cyber bullying.  While Dr. Kontostathis' primary research interest is in the theory and practice of information retrieval and textual data mining, she also has an investment in undergraduate research, and has co-authored many articles with her students.  Currently, Dr.  Kontostathis is the Principal Investigator on a three-year $498,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to study and prevent cyber-bullying and cyber-predation.  She is also the Co-Principal Investigator on a National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduate Sites grant that began in Summer 2010.

Before returning to academia in 1999, April worked for 13 years for Electronic Data Systems (EDS), where she specialized in project management and database design and administration.  Several of the applications described on the Mobile Apps page were are direct result of her work with students in a Software Engineering course.
Akshaye Dhawan

Akshaye Dhawan, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, earned a Ph.D. in computer science from Georgia State University. He has authored several articles focused on distributed algorithms for scheduling in Wireless Sensor Networks. Dr. Dhawan's primary research looks at the design of distributed and localized algorithms for a variety of problems in Wireless Sensor Networks including coverage, routing and fault tolerance. Additionally, he has also worked on the Semantic Web particularly in the Bio-medical field. His most recent collaborations in this area have been with faculty at Emory University on the Ontology for Newborn Screening Follow-up and Translational Research. Before working in Academia, Akshaye worked for Applied Software as developer of enterprise software solutions.
